2016-10-11: Shootouts between drug traffickers and the police occurred in the poor living quarters of Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinho, in the southern parts of Rio de Janeiro city and close to the neighbourhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema, since Monday morning (10 October, local time). Before the clashes, criminal gangs had attacked police stations. Several explosion were heard, according to reports from eyewitnesses. At least three people were killed and five others were injured.
Heightened security measures and ongoing operations of security forces are to be expected. Further armed clashes are possible during arrests of suspects. Travellers are advised to avoid the Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinho neighbourhood as well as operations of security forces, to exercise caution and to follow instructions from security forces.
