2017-11-21: According to reports from Monday (20 November) volcanic activity has been observed at the Öræfajökull volcano in the Vatnajökull national park. Experts believe that an eruption is possible, however, not imminent. The alert level has been raised to yellow, and a so-called uncertainty phase has been declared, with the situation constantly monitored by Icelandic civil protection services, as well as the Iceland Meteorological office. In case of an eruption, the tourist sites Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, and the Skaftafell visitor center may be affected, as well as large areas of Iceland in general.
Travellers should follow instructions by local authorities and monitor the situation via local sources.
