2019-08-21: On Wednesday (21 August), protests occurred in Timika, where demonstrators hurled stones at security forces and tried to enter government buildings. Security forces fired warning shots. Further protests occurred in Fakfak. Since Sunday (18 August), there have been protests in Manokwari and other cities in the provinces of Papua Barat and Papua. About 1,200 additional security forces have been deployed to Manokwari and Sorong. Internet access has been restricted in parts of Papua province.
Heightened security measures and operations of security forces are to be expected. Violent clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Travellers are advised to exercise caution, to strictly avoid demonstrations, road blockades, large gatherings, and deployments of security forces, and to follow instructions from security forces.
