Update 2020-08-03 (1): According to further reports, the number of deaths rose to at least 24 people. Among them are assailants, security forces and civilians. More than 1,000 escaped prisoners were recaptured and the Afghan military was deployed in the city. The city of Jalalabad has been sealed off and there is a curfew. The fighting continues.
2020-08-03: Since Sunday afternoon (02 August, local time), at least 11 people have been killed in an ongoing IS attack on a prison in Jalalabad. Dozens more have already been injured. Local authorities expect the number of victims to continue to rise. Numerous prisoners were also freed during the attack.
Heightened security measures and operations of security forces are to be expected. Armed clashes are possible during arrests of terror suspects. Travellers are advised to exercise high caution, to strictly avoid operations of security forces, and to follow instructions from security forces.
