Update 2018-01-23: According to current reports, a soldier was hit by an avalanche and killed, while attending a military exercise in the area at the time of the eruption. At least eleven people were injured, including five severely injured people. Two people are in critical condition. One hundred people were evacuated from the area. Ongoing eruptions, which may trigger further avalanches, are possible.
2018-01-23: Dozens of people were injured by a volcanic eruption at Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, around 30 kilometres east of Nagano, on Tuesday morning (23 January, local time). At least two people were severely injured. The eruption triggered an avalanche in the ski area, which buried one person. Several people were injured on a ski lift and a ski lodge was damaged by rockfall. Authorities are warning against rockfall within a radius of two kilometres. The warning level was raised from 1 to 3 (on a five-level scale). This means, that a restricted zone was established and people in need of help were advised to prepare an evacuation.
Travellers are advised to inform themselves via local media and authorities about the current situation on site, to follow instructions from authorities, to exercise caution, as well as to avoid the surrounding area of the volcano.
