Update 2016-08-25: According to recent media reports, 247 people were killed in the earthquake on Wednesday (24 August). Hundreds of people were injured, including several people with severe injuries. Multiple people are still trapped under debris in the earthquake area, the number of casualties is therefore expected to rise. Widespread damage and high numbers of casualties are being reported particularly from the villages of Amatrice, Accumoli, and Arquata del Tronto.
Major traffic disruptions are expected. Aftershocks are to be expected in the region, which can cause further damage and cause landslides. Travellers are advised to exercise high caution, avoid damaged buildings and bridges, and to follow instructions from local authorities.

Most affected was the town of Amatrice, where at least 35 people were killed and most buildings were completely destroyed. More than 2,500 people have lost their homes. Dozens are still missing.
