Update 2019-01-28: According to reports from Monday (28 January), the city of Jolo has been closed off by security forces. Roadblocks were installed around the city. The perpetrators have not been found yet. The terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
2019-01-27: On Sunday (27 January), two blasts occurred during a church service at Jolo Cathedral in southern Sulu province. At least 17 people were killed and about 43 others injured, most of them civilians. The island is a stronghold of Islamist militants.
Heightened security measures and local traffic disruptions are to be expected. Travellers should exercise heightened caution and follow instructions by security forces.
