2016-10-21: On Friday afternoon at 02:07 p.m. (21 October, local time), a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Tottori Prefecture, approximately eight kilometres south of Kurayoshi. Tens of thousands of household lost power, several injuries have been reported. Bullet train services have been suspended in the area. Several fires have broken out. Several buildings, including the city hall and a hospital in Kurayoshi, were damaged, at least one building collapsed.
Traffic disruptions are expected. Aftershocks are to be expected in the region, which can cause further damage and cause landslides. Travellers are advised to exercise high caution, avoid damaged buildings and bridges, and to follow instructions from local authorities.
