2018-06-08: According to reports on Wednesday (06 June), the city of Shillong in the state of Meghalaya has been subject to a curfew. The authorities declared the curfew following tensions between the Christian community and Dalit Sikhs (so-called untouchables). The measures are in place from 08:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m. local time. There have been several Dalit uprisings in the past.
Heightened security measures are to be expected. Ongoing violent protests are possible. also in the upcoming days. Travellers are advised to exercise caution, to avoid gatherings, and to follow instructions from security forces.
