Update 2018-03-06: According to recent reports on Tuesday (06 March), as a result of the clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in the city of Kandy, in the Central Province of the country, the authorities imposed a statewide state of emergency following the imposed curfew.
2018-03-05: The authorities imposed a curfew on Monday (05 March) to calm the situation, following anti-Muslim riots in the Kandy region last week (26 February-04 March). The situation threatened to escalate after a man of the Buddhist majority died from injuries sustained during the riots on the weekend (03/04 March).
Heightened security measures are to be expected, local traffic disruptions are possible, further violent incidents cannot be ruled out. Travellers should exercise increased caution, comply with the the curfew and follow instructions of security forces.
