2017-02-20: Unknown perpetrators attacked the Vietnamese ship MV Giang Hai in the south-western Philippines, off the coast of Malaysia, and kidnapped several people on Sunday evening (19 February, local time). A member of the crew was killed. Multiple Vietnamese nationals were rescued by the coast guard and navy. The area is known to be a stronghold of the Islamist terror organisation Abu Sayyaf
2016-10-24: According to reports from Sunday (23 October) the Nigerian army repelled the hijacking of a ship by pirates in the Niger Delta in the past week. The attack was thwarted in the Agge area on the Ramos River. Pirate attacks increased in numbers in this region in the past months. The Nigerian military killed and arrested several pirates in the near past.
Further pirate attacks cannot be ruled out. Heightened security measures are to be expected. Travellers are advised to exercise high caution and to follow instructions from security forces.
2016-10-21: On Thursday (20 October) the captain and a crew member, a South Korean and a Philippine national, were kidnapped off the southern coast of the Philippines by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf. At least ten armed suspects attacked the MV Dongbang Giant and boarded the ship.
