Update 2018-10-07: Several buildings collapsed due to the earthquake on Saturday evening (06 October, local time). The epicentre of the earthquake is located around 20 kilometres north-west of the city of Port-de-Paix, in the northern department of Nord-Ouest. Multiple people were killed, according to a government statement. Damage was reported from the cities of Gros-Morne and Plaisance. The earthquake could also be felt in Port-au-Prince. However, there were no initial reports of major damage.
Aftershocks, which may cause additional damage, are possible in the region. Travellers are advised to inform themselves via local media and authorities about the current situation on site, to follow instructions from authorities, to exercise high caution near mountainsides and rivers, as well as to avoid damaged buildings, bridges, and roads.
